Affordable female health care is a right every woman should have no matter their income. Planned Parenthood provides essential services that many women need but may not be able to afford otherwise.

There is a misconception that Planned Parenthood only provides abortion services, which is provided, but it is not the only service offered. They offer other services that women need at very little to no cost for reliable, affordable and life-saving health care. Planned Parenthood offers accessible birth control methods ranging from the pill, intrauterine devices and emergency contraceptives. Women can get cervical, ovarian and breast cancer screenings, along with HPV vaccines, which can help to prevent cervical cancer. Regular testing for STIs is easily accessible at all Planned Parenthood locations. All women should have access to these services at an affordable cost.

Throughout President Donald Trump’s years in office, he has attempted to defund Planned Parenthood. This will leave women without the health care they need. In June, a new rule will be going into effect that requires insurers in the Obamacare marketplace to send separate bills to enrollees, one for abortion coverage and one for all other healthcare costs, as stated by informational website Modern Healthcare. The government should not be interfering with a woman’s right to her choice of health care.

According to the Washington Examiner, Planned Parenthood of Maryland and the American Civil Liberties Union, a nonprofit organization, are suing the Trump administration over the rule. A plaintiff in the case named Rebecca expressed her concern.

“It is cruel and unacceptable that the Trump administration is interfering in my health care and trying to interfere with how health insurance companies do business, just because they want to make it more difficult for me to access my right to abortion,” Rebecca stated in the Examiner article.

If Planned Parenthood is defunded, it will leave low-income women at risk. The organization does not charge based on one fixed price. Financial situations and insurance coverage are considered when women are seeking services at Planned Parenthood. This is so low-income women or teenagers can have access to female health care services regardless of their financial situation.

Planned Parenthood needs to be protected from funding cuts because so many women rely on the affordable and accessible services it provides.
