Defensive struggles cause a late 98-79 loss against CBU

NAU women’s basketball traveled to Riverside, California to face a red hot California Baptist University (CBU) Lancers. The Lumberjacks came off their first win of the season versus Seattle University 88-80 while CBU had a record of 4-0 and was seeking a five-game win streak to open the season.

The resilience of NAU really showed as they battled back multiple times, but was ultimately outmatched as CBU rolled in late to win 98-79.

Tons of scoring early on gave NAU a 17-14 lead. The Lancers shot the ball extremely well, hitting seven 3-pointers in the first quarter.

CBU had a 28-21 lead over NAU at the end of the first quarter.

The Lancers' offense continued their momentum to start the second quarter. Sophomore redshirt forward Nina Radford scored nine more points for the Lumberjacks, cutting NAU’s deficit to 11 with six minutes left to play in the first half.

NAU had gone on a 7-0 scoring run but trailed 42-34 with two minutes remaining in the second quarter. Radford led the Lumberjacks with 14 points as they fell behind 47-38 going into halftime.

A 10-2 scoring run by the Lumberjacks tied the score at 62 late in the third quarter. CBU responded with a 9-0 scoring run of its own to take a 71-62 lead after three quarters. The third quarter scoring was dead even as each team scored 24 points.

The Lancers shot lights out in the final quarter. They shot 67% from the field in the fourth quarter and 51.4% for the whole game. CBU outscored the Lumberjacks 27-17 in the fourth quarter to win the game 98-79. Radford led the Lumberjacks with a team-high 27 points. Senior forward Peyton Carroll was second in team scoring with 12 points.

NAU will travel to Fresno, California to face California State University, Fresno Sunday at 3 p.m. With the loss, NAU moves to 1-2 on the season while CBU remains undefeated with a 5-0 record.
