Jack Murphy leaves NAU after seven years

Northern Arizona University’s men’s basketball head coach Jack Murphy yells at the referee in a Big Sky Conference men’s basketball game against Portland State University at the Skydome, Jan 19, 2019.

Men's head basketball coach Jack Murphy is leaving NAU as he accepted a position as associate head coach at University of Arizona.

The announcement was made through an article from NAU Athletics. In the release, Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics, Mike Marlow stated, "Coach Murphy cares about his players and staff as much as any head coach I've been around in 27 years in this business."

Murphy is heading back to his alma mater after coaching at 7000 feet for seven years. A highlight of his career was the 14-2 home mark in the 2014-15 season.

Murphy has not made any comment publicly on his move but he has changed his Twitter profile photos and handle to represent the University of Arizona Wildcats.

Marlow promoted Shane Burcar to interim head coach, leaving it inconclusive of who will be the head coach for the upcoming season.

Burcar joined the Lumberjack staff in April 2018 when he replaced assistant coach Matt Dunn, who was hired on staff with Murphy.

Prior to recently moving to NAU, Burcar coached at Mesa High School for 12 seasons with an overall record of 237-103.

Burcar commented on the promotion via NAU Athletics Twitter.

“I am thrilled to get to work on the court, as well as being a positive influence in the lives of each of the outstanding student-athletes we have in our basketball program.”
