NAU men’s and women’s tennis teams captured the titles of Big Sky Champion April 27.
The women’s team faced Idaho State in the championship match for the fourth consecutive year. The Lumberjacks fell at the feet of Idaho the previous three years but finally defeated the Vandals this 2019 spring season.
Junior Chiara Tomasetti faced Marianna Petrei, the player responsible for her first loss of the season just two weeks ago. Tomasetti defeated Petrei, earning NAU the doubles point.
The women’s team finished the match with a 4-0 victory.
On the same day, the men’s team took on Portland State in a fight for the Big Sky Champion title.
In a win that did not come easy for the Lumberjacks, the final match point came down to the doubles pair of seniors Tim Handel and Ruben Montano. The duo secured a point and carried their team to victory.
For the first time in program history, NAU will be competing in the NCAA tournament. They will play the University of Southern California Trojans.
The Big Sky Conference will be represented by NAU in the singles portion of the NCAA tournament for the first time in 13 years. Handel clinched a spot in the championship and will be the face of Big Sky in Orlando, Florida May 20-25.
