It wasn't pretty, but the NAU men's basketball team continues their hot start to the season after a 63-56 win against the University of California, Riverside Highlanders Thursday night.
The first half was appalling, scoring-wise, as neither team could find consistent offense. The Lumberjacks only shot 36% in the half, while UC Riverside shot 40%. The Highlanders led 24-23 at halftime.
The second half would be a different story though, as NAU improved from mid-range and got to the free-throw line 16 times in the final 20 minutes. The Lumberjacks would make 14 of those 16 shots, while UC Riverside would only get to the line six times, making three of them. NAU would finish at 46% shooting in the second half to edge the win over UC Riverside.
Sophomore guard Cameron Shelton led the way for NAU with a 15-point performance. Senior guard Ted McCree finished with a 14-point performance and redshirt sophomore forward Nik Mains added on 12 points. This was a gritty performance from the Lumberjacks, as they pulled out the victory even though they struggled from three-point range and missing redshirt sophomore guard Luke Avdalovic, who is the second-highest scorer on the team.
The NAU men's team will head to Malibu, California Saturday for a matinee showdown with the University of Pepperdine in their final non-conference game of the season. After, they will hit the holiday break and won't return to on-court action until Dec. 28 against their first conference opponent of the year, the University of Montana.
