The start to the 2020 campaign for NAU men’s cross country was full of uncertainty as the season was postponed to spring 2021. However, the Lumberjacks were given an opportunity to run after the Big Sky Conference passed a ruling earlier in the week allowing schools to schedule up to two meets in the fall.
Looking to have a bounce-back season after Brigham Young University (BYU) broke their three-year national title streak in 2019, NAU started this season strong as they dominated to win the individual and team races at the Oklahoma State University (OSU) Invitational in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Senior Luis Grijalva led the way for the Lumberjacks as he ran inside the top five for the majority of the men’s eight-kilometer race. Staying out front paid off for Grijalva as he passed OSU junior Isai Rodriguez for the lead in the final stretch and held off a pair of BYU runners in junior Conner Mantz and sophomore Casey Clinger to earn the victory.
Scoring for NAU in the team’s victory were sophomore Abdihamid Nur (5th), sophomore Corey Gorgas (9th), junior Ryan Raff (10th) and sophomore Drew Bosley (11th).
The NAU women’s team did not compete at the invitational.
While no future meets have been scheduled, the men’s team can compete in one more fall meet.
