The Lumberjack Team Challenge, which took place at the Walkup Skydome, was the second event of the fresh indoor track season as NAU prepares to make deep runs in both NCAA indoor and outdoor competitions this year. NAU took on the likes of individuals not representing schools and universities such as ASU, Grand Canyon University, Southern Utah University and others.
The sprints were not NAU's bread and butter, as no man nor woman representing the Lumberjacks could snag a win in any short-distance event Friday. However, that doesn't mean there weren't good performances.
Junior Jada Jackson finished fifth of 29 runners in the women's 200-meter dash. Junior Erick Thompson finished sixth in the men's 200-meter dash. Sophomore Melanie Loff finished second in the women's 600-meter run and freshman Theo Quax finished third in the men's 800-meter run.
When it came to the long-distance events, that is when NAU began to take over. Freshman Bryn Morley claimed second in the women's 1-mile run and the Lumberjack women took seven of the top 10 finishing positions. The NAU men would sweep the podium in the men's 1-mile run and took eight of the top 10 positions. Senior Geordie Beamish won the race. Senior Luis Grijalva finished second and senior Tyler Day finished third.
In the 3,000 meter event, senior Mikayla Malaspina took the win in the women's race while sophomore Ryan Raff won the men's race. Both the NAU women's and men's team swept the podium for the event.
In the field events, freshman Madeline Wilson took third place in the women's high jump. Senior Cameron Rayford claimed victory in the men's triple jump. Junior Parker Jones took second in the men's shot put and the NAU men would take all top five finishers in the weight throw, as sophomore William Beaudry won the competition.
The NAU men totaled 119 points to take the team victory, while the women would fall to ASU in the team competition by a 20.5 point margin.
NAU Track and Field's next event will be the Mountain T's Invitational, beginning Jan. 31.
