The NAU women’s tennis team faced the University of Montana Grizzlies Thursday afternoon in Flagstaff. Ultimately, the Lumberjacks pulled through with a 7-0 victory and are now on a two-match win streak. With the win, NAU is 2-0 in the Big Sky Conference.
The Lumberjacks displayed their teamwork by winning two-thirds of the doubles matches. In the first two doubles match, NAU won 7-6, then lost to the Grizzlies 6-4.
In the third doubles match, NAU’s pair of sophomore Emilie Haakansson and freshman Elinor Beazley broke the tiebreaker by winning the match 6-3 against the Grizzles to go up one point.
Last year's Big Sky Conference MVP, senior Chiara Tomasetti, finished her singles match with a straight-sets match win of 6-1, 6-1 against Grizzlies junior Julia Ronney. Tomasetti, along with junior Ellie Millard, lost in the second doubles match. Millard had a close first set in her singles match, but she squeezed out of it 6-4. Then, she won her second set 6-1, adding another point for the Lumberjacks.
Sophomore Adrianna Sosnowska won her sets against Grizzlies freshman Olivia Oosterbaan 6-1, 6-3. Sosnowska used her precise ball placement and serving skills to secure the point for the Lumberjacks. She was excellent at forcing Osterbaan to move side to side and placing the ball short on the opposing side of the net.
“For me, I just feel it. It is not like I practice that,” Sosnowska said. “When I spend more time on the court, I feel more confident. So, that is why I can do this because I feel more comfortable with my other shots.”
Freshman Mimi Bland and Beazley won both their matches in straight sets.
NAU won all matches against the Grizzlies to complete the 7-0 sweep. The Lumberjacks are now 3-3 overall and 2-0 in the Big Sky Conference. NAU women’s tennis will face off against the University of New Mexico Saturday at 10 a.m.
