It has been a less than stellar beginning to the season for the NAU women's basketball team, but they will go into Big Sky Conference play with some momentum after picking up a win in their final non-conference game of the season in the Maui Classic against San Jose State University.

It looked as though the Lumberjacks would run away with this one as they would take an early 26-10 lead after the first quarter, shooting 61% while San Jose State only shot 20%. However, NAU's shooting would deteriorate with every quarter, allowing the Spartans to make it a competitive game in the final minutes.

Neither team had a great second half offensively as both teams would make just 25% of their shots. The Lumberjacks only made six total field goals in the entire half, but their saving grace came from getting to the foul line 22 times and making 16 of their free throws.

The game was dominated by redshirt sophomore forward Nina Radford, who had 20 points and made all eight of her free throws. Radford would be named to the all-tournament team for the Maui Classic following the game. Junior guard Lauren Orndoffhad a 15-point performance, shooting 6 of 10 from the field. Redshirt junior guard Jacey Bailey added 12 points in the Lumberjack victory.

The NAU women are now on holiday break and will return to on-court action Dec. 28 to open Big Sky Conference play against the University of Montana in Flagstaff.
