Jalen Cone, former star guard of the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks, announced his transfer to the University of California, Berkeley. Cone will join the PAC-12 school in the midst of its rebuild, one that saw the Golden Bears hire its new head coach, Mark Madsen, after going 3-29 last season.
This is Cone’s third school of his college career. He previously spent two seasons at Virginia Tech before heading to Flagstaff for two years.
Cone will look to build off a season where he scored 17.6 points per game, 2.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists as NAU reached the finals of the Big Sky basketball tournament.
The Golden Bears will need a secondary scorer and Cone’s scoring ability certainly could help. The team's leading scorer last year, junior guard Devin Askew, averaged 15.5 points per game on 38/30/86 shooting splits.
Moving to the Pac-12 will be a distinct change from the Big Sky, but Cone’s growth as a player over the past two seasons at NAU should translate well to the Power 5 conference.
This news comes soon after NAU acquired former Pepperdine Center Carson Basham from the transfer portal.
